This offbeat tale of a suicidal young kid who befriends an elderly and eccentric lady captures the essence of the counterculture era (not that I was there), and that may be the little extra something that makes it great. The theme of teen depression and angst is handled well — so is that of accepting others and weirdos accepting themselves, but the movie is hardly a “message” movie (but if it makes people a little more free, hey, that’s a bonus). You can see how this film in particular was a direct influence on Wes Anderson, though without his sometimes-tendency towards elitist smugness. The filmmaking and performances aren’t mannered, either. The lead back-and-forth between Cort and Gordon is natural and perfect. There are some laugh-out-loud funny moments, such as when Harold chases Maude with her own picket sign, but I’d hesitate to call this a “black comedy,” since that suggests someone’s being put down in the mix. This is a wonderful and beautiful movie, and I defy anyone to not be moved by the many poignant moments, punctuated by a terrific Cat Stevens soundtrack. I was really surprised, since I thought this would be “let’s laugh at the freaks” movie. But it’s not. 10/10
