I have wanted to see this film for years, and thanks to the wonders of DVD, I now have. Andrew Prine plays Simon, who lives in a storm drain, is a “true magician” and also talks to trees. He becomes acquainted with a young man while in jail for vagrancy, and in turn is introduced to a wealthy man named Hercules (?!), who uses Simon as sort of a novelty at his parties in his home, selling trinkets, etc., to the amused party-goers. But Simon IS the real deal, and can cast spells, and proves it. Just don’t cross him. Simon becomes acquainted with a girl who is the pill-popping daughter of the D.A., and when tragedy occurs and the D.A. declares war on all drug dealers, some turn to Simon for help & things get a bit out of hand.
Prine is truly the star of this, and his deadpan humor and cynicism really make the movie. This is a very odd film, not at all typical of the time in which it was made, and it’s really not a horror film but I don’t really know how else to categorize it. Some of the effects remind me of something from “The Outer Limits” (only in color). The Dark Sky DVD is great, nice transfer and supposedly uncut and uncensored. Well done, very off-beat, worth seeing if you like 70’s horror flicks and, uh, oddities. 8 out of 10.
