This film centers around a Gothic girl that just moved into a new town with absolutely no friends. She goes to a Halloween store and buys a book called "The Evil Thing," which can call up a sickly, two headed disgusting beast.
Wow… a direct to video R. L. Stine movie starring Emily Osmet and some surfer-dude Family Channel "cool-dude" wind-blown-hair-styling environmentalist left wing fascist… (never mind)? Sounds like a bad film right? Well, my sister forced me to watch it and I was actually surprised by the quality of the film. Great pacing, good writing, great acting and alright special effects. R. L. Stine films and TV shows tend to be cliché, cliché, cliché, but this one was actually great. I read all of R. L. Stine’s work when I was a kid, and I said I’d give it a shot.
Emily Osmet pulled off the emo-Gothic character surprisingly well. It was to the point that it was actually believable. I really, actually, liked her character.
Overall, a very well made movie.
Only one glaring problem. In my school, I find that, well, goths usually don’t go after the surfer-dude Family Channel "cool-dude" wind-blown-hair-styling environmentalist left wing fascist… you know what I mean.
An 8 out of 10. Shocked? Give this one a shot. You’ll be surprised.
