In this adaptation of the Joseph Wambaugh novel, Roy Fehler (Stacy Keach) has become a cop to help pay his way through law school. Mentored by his veteran partner, Andy Kilvinski (George C. Scott), the kind of guy who has his own offbeat ways of doing things, Roy finds himself becoming attached to his job to the exclusion of other things in his life.
Stirling Silliphant scripted this, the first Wambaugh adaptation to reach the screen. The author, having been a real L.A.P.D. cop, brings all of his knowledge and experience to the material. It shows the harsh realities of the job and the people involved – the cops themselves, their families, the criminals, the victims. Most of all, it’s an effective tribute to a line of work that can be taken for granted. There’s an occasional bit of humor to the script (for example, the sequence with the hookers) but overall it has a very sobering after effect. What happens when Kilvinski believes his life no longer has meaning after retirement, what he chooses to do is nothing short of chilling. The ending is especially potent and depressing.
The highly capable director Richard Fleischer does a great job as usual; the score by Quincy Jones is excellent as well. Scott and Keach do a superb job in the leads, with equally fine support from Jane Alexander, Scott Wilson, Rosalind Cash, and Clifton James. The cast also includes a great variety of dependable actors in smaller parts: Erik Estrada, James B. Sikking, Isabel Sanford, Carol Speed, William Atherton, Ed Lauter, Stefan Gierasch, Roger E. Mosley, and Pepe Serna.
“The New Centurions” is a well-made, provocative, and interesting movie that definitely hits a nerve. Highly recommended.
